          Carnival Song

now Bacchus' car with feline team
      on Evening's starry stage revealed
from Eastern tropics leads along
the Rev'ling train, the merry throng
      and Wakes the dreary field.

and So the verdant buds show forth
against the woodland browns and greys
like Horns upon a tufty brow
new-Grown upon the kinder-cow
      that With its siblings plays.

first In the throng's a pretty girl
around whose limbs a snake's coils twine
then Horse-tailed, bald Silenus comes
inSide his veins a mixture runs
      both Human and equine.

   Two-formed too, with bearded chin
and Horns, and shaggy lower half,
with Body that's half-goat, half-man,
the Figure of old Aigipan
      next Follows on the path.

and Now well-formed Aquarius shows -
the Youth that on his shoulders brings
pure Water in an ornate jar
a Load he's carried from afar
      from Clear muse-haunted springs.

this Draft he'll marry to the wine
so That it's fire is watered down
and Likewise, now, see Bacchus ride
to Meet his lovely future bride
    with gift of starry crown.
